Norseman to Ceduna (continued)

10/09/18

So finally up Eucla Pass and onwards, the road is long but without very many winding turns, the vegetation is mostly low shrubs, there are some bushes up to around three metres tall and although this is tall for a “Bush” I think due to their form they qualify as bushes rather than tree. The true null abor (no trees) comes east of the town of Nullabor and a sign announces that this is the start of the treeless plain, so although this journey is referred to crossing the Nullabor from Norseman to Ceduna or vice-versa the true null abor is only about 50 km long.

The day continued in the same way, long straight stretches of road, waving to approaching vehicles and generally getting a wave in return. The day has been hot and windy, up to 33ºC and every time we exit the car the flies come in droves to drink the fluid from your eyes, nose and mouth and they even try for the odd ear entry, very annoying and unpleasant.

We stopped for lunch overlooking the sea and the cliffs of the Great Australian Bight, it was an isolated spot not one of the manufactured viewing point where most travellers stop so there were no guard rails or signs to protect and warn the foolish. We felt it unwise to go too close to the edge but we could hear the waves crashing against the rocks below and by looking along the coast rather than over the edge we got some idea of the height of the cliffs, all very spectacular.

A little easier access to the water

Our camp for the night was at a road side rest stop and it was hear we discovered we had or still have an unwanted hitch hiker. We were just sitting after dinner when Pauline jumped to the roof and landed on top of the seat, the reaction was caused by a mouse, so I spent the next hour looking in every accessible nook and cranny and blocking holes in an attempt to find the monster and make my mouse hating wife a little more relaxed. A caravan is not big enough for a mouse and her. We had some RatSak so we left that out for our friends supper and finally retired. I was woken a few times through the night when a torch flashed around when the slightest mouse like rustle was heard, but we survived the night.

The cruise into Ceduna about 170 km passed without incident or even a memorable or mentionable moment. The RatSak had been snacked on but we decided to get a trap and be rid of the stowaway once and for all.

The weather has gone from hot and windy to cold and wet and windy and tonight we are in a RV park in Streaky Bay. The traps are set, the heater is on and lets hope we can leave tomorrow without one traveller
